Natural fall additions to your decor can and should include pumpkins, gourds and harvest corn, but you can also bring in select holiday-themed decorations that won’t frighten your budget or scare the little ones.
1. Bat Mobile
No, not the batmobile, Robin. Instead, Martha Stewart Living recommends creating an indoor bat mobile that you can hang near a window. Likely, you already have many of the materials on hand including card stock, thread and thumb tacks. Put this mobile together and hang it where a gentle breeze can get these bats flying. You can also take an existing mobile and replace those characters with bats of your own making.
2. Owl Pumpkin
Jack O’Lanterns can scare young children, putting a fright into them that will make them dread Halloween. You can bring in some whimsy, by turning that farmer’s market pumpkin into a “hoo-riific” owl pumpkin. Choose one medium and one large pumpkin, three gourds and use your household tools and supplies to make this festive decoration. 3. Bookshelf Tree
With this idea, you need to have a sturdy book shelf and a good harvest of pumpkins. Put those extra pumpkins you grew in your yard or bought at the market to good use, by strategically placing each one on four or five shelves, to form the makings of a tree. This Country Living idea requires only a black felt-tip pen and perhaps a knife to cut back overgrown stems. Repurpose your pumpkins in November to make pies or place in your compost pile.
4. Ghost-Lit Walkway
What could be more fun to prepare and easy to make than a ghost-lit walkway learning from your driveway or front yard to your front door? With this project, you won’t have to buy anything other than the milk that your children drink each day. Those plastic one-gallon jugs will eventually be recycled. In the meantime you can wash out each one and paint or cut out faces on the front. You’ll need a knife, a black marker and candles to pull this off, a low-budget and novel idea from Money Crashers.
Fright Night
Come Halloween night, you can also hang up pretend cob web, put out fake specimen jars or perhaps place a spooky face on the walkway to your home. Of course, consider the young ones who may find the decorations too much and leave you with more candy to eat or dispense with on November 1.
